Definitely the most powerful entry。 I see now why people frame this as anti-war because this volume certainly covers that。

I think this is the most powerful volume in the series。 The horrors of war and genocide come to life, and characters that you know and love actively participated because they were "following orders"。 They are traumatized by their own actions and remorse later, and as Mustang said, they now bear the eyes of murderers。 You can tell that Arakawa interviewed veterans for this, and the parallel to Japan in WWII is very strong。 In the right environment with enough propaganda, people can commit atrocit I think this is the most powerful volume in the series。 The horrors of war and genocide come to life, and characters that you know and love actively participated because they were "following orders"。 They are traumatized by their own actions and remorse later, and as Mustang said, they now bear the eyes of murderers。 You can tell that Arakawa interviewed veterans for this, and the parallel to Japan in WWII is very strong。 In the right environment with enough propaganda, people can commit atrocities because that's "orders"。I think Armstrong was the bravest soldier out of the four main characters because he had it in him to defy orders by saving Ishbalans and fleeing the battlefield。 Ironically, this made everyone call him a coward and weak。 I argue that the rest were weak。 Hawkeye, Mustang, and Hughes sacrificed their morals and values (and many lives) over orders from higher up and pressure from fellow soldiers。 。。。more

This is a very dark volume and deals with some heavy topics in flashback。。。。its a very compelling read especially at this point in the series, and while it serves to flesh out the characters backstories a bit more it also doesn't drive the overal plot of the story forward This is a very dark volume and deals with some heavy topics in flashback。。。。its a very compelling read especially at this point in the series, and while it serves to flesh out the characters backstories a bit more it also doesn't drive the overal plot of the story forward 。。。more

FMA volume 15: the war crimes volumeThis volume is the long flashback focusing (largely) on Roy, the Flame Alchemist, and how he and his squad came to be, during and in the wake of the Ishbalan 'civil war'/extermination campaign。 A little more much-hungered-after Scar background。 Comes through the frame story of Riza relaying the story to Ed; it's wonderful to get some more of her story as well。It is the great, interesting, and more nuanced storytelling take on the horrors of an unjust 'war' (ho FMA volume 15: the war crimes volumeThis volume is the long flashback focusing (largely) on Roy, the Flame Alchemist, and how he and his squad came to be, during and in the wake of the Ishbalan 'civil war'/extermination campaign。 A little more much-hungered-after Scar background。 Comes through the frame story of Riza relaying the story to Ed; it's wonderful to get some more of her story as well。It is the great, interesting, and more nuanced storytelling take on the horrors of an unjust 'war' (honestly I shouldn't use scare quotes; plenty of bigger countries pick a country with resources and pick their justification to go to war; there's no guarantee of 'a fair fight'; I think it's the fact that the only resources the Amestrian military is interested in is human sacrifice that makes it feel especially parodic; especially when an Amestrian military squad who are the equal parts goofy/cool operators B-side heroes of the story, and this is not a 'good' war。)(that's a mess of a paragraph, apologies mostly that I'm not going to immediately fix it) 。。。more

We finally learn how Scar was made。 Scars are always made through war。 What is the new Secret that is hidden in the daughter of the Master?

*Read 12/7/21So it was final exam season in December 2021, and what did I decide to do instead of studying? Binge read the last 13 volumes of Fullmetal Alchemist, cry my heart out because it’s over, and then was emotional destroyed yet again by the anime。 I make smart decisions :’)

The War is Hell volume。Arakawa most clearly frames this as Hawkeye telling Ed about the events of the bloody Ishbal Civil Way, in which Amestris went from suppressing guerillas to straight-up genocide about six years before the main plotline, using state alchemists to wipe out whole towns, but from the events covered and who could know what, it's actually a combination of Hawkeye telling Ed, Dr。 Marcoh telling Scar, and Dr。 Knox telling Al, Mei Chang, and Lan Fan。In her author's note at the begi The War is Hell volume。Arakawa most clearly frames this as Hawkeye telling Ed about the events of the bloody Ishbal Civil Way, in which Amestris went from suppressing guerillas to straight-up genocide about six years before the main plotline, using state alchemists to wipe out whole towns, but from the events covered and who could know what, it's actually a combination of Hawkeye telling Ed, Dr。 Marcoh telling Scar, and Dr。 Knox telling Al, Mei Chang, and Lan Fan。In her author's note at the beginning of the volume, Arakawa discussing interviewing Japanese soldiers who were on the front in WWII and listening to a lot of intense stories and watching film footage, reading accounts, and watching documentaries。 This volume reflects her research and it's incredibly rough reading, particularly since it depicts Mustang, Hawkeye, Hughes, and Armstrong, all characters we've come to root for, participating in a massacre。 People who are trying to just scrape a living out of the desert, including old people and small children, are shot or incinerated or prevented from fleeing to safety so that they can be shot or incinerated。 Winry's parents are the only Amestrians who actively work to save Ishbalan lives and it's only an ill-timed encounter with Scar that prevents them from dying at the hands of their own countrymen。 Doctors Marcoh and Knox particpate in human experiementation: Marcoh for the philosopher's stone, Knox with the good old-fashioned Nazi/Unit 731 horrors。The combination storyteller of Hawkeye/Marcoh/Knox all fully accept this as awful, monstrous。 Marcoh wants his listener, Scar, to kill him。 Knox explains to Al and the girls that after the war he was unworthy of treating living human beings ever again, and that his family left him。 Hawkeye tell Ed that if Mustang succeeds in dragging Amestris back to democracy, she and him and a whole bunch of others working for a more peaceful future could end up, rightfully, as convicted war criminals。Side Notes:We're introduced to Kimblee, just in time for him to throw a wrench in the works of the protagonists or the next few volumes。Hawkeye and Mustang's backstory (heh) is explained。Scar's, too。 The panels where Mustang gathers his team together for the first time made my heart grow three sizes。 。。。more

I think that this volume was very integral to the story, however it didn’t spend any time with the characters I love, so that dropped the rating a bit。

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 09/18/21God this volume is so difficult to read。 This might have been the first glimpse of war that I read as a child, and it left a huge impact。 This volume is, essentially a combined flashback。 Part Scar recalling what happened to him after finding Dr Marco last volume。 Part Riza recalling her perspective as a solider in this "civil war"。 Part generally being told about what really happened in this conflict。 From the decisions by command, to state alchemists, to foot soldiers, from Ishvalan fi 09/18/21God this volume is so difficult to read。 This might have been the first glimpse of war that I read as a child, and it left a huge impact。 This volume is, essentially a combined flashback。 Part Scar recalling what happened to him after finding Dr Marco last volume。 Part Riza recalling her perspective as a solider in this "civil war"。 Part generally being told about what really happened in this conflict。 From the decisions by command, to state alchemists, to foot soldiers, from Ishvalan fighters, to innocent children who are killed in cold blood, we see many ways of processing the trauma of war。We see war crimes, and just how evil the white-coded military behaved towards their own citizens based on ethnicity。 We see soldiers wanting the conflict to end, but how they continue to follow orders despite everything。Particularly powerful was Hughes saying he didn't want to die, in contrast to Kimblee simply saying that his fellow soldiers chose this life。 His speech is cruel, but he makes a compelling point。 Especially when it's truly the Ishvalan people who have no choice。 They either kill as many people as they can in a hopeless battle for survival, or humiliate themselves by asking for mercy from monsters。I know Arikawa points out that even some Ishvalan people would also abuse power if they had it, but who wouldn't want revenge when confronted with genocide? Scar is disgusted with his brother's compatriots but when HE truly loses everything, what does he turn to?Vengeance。Mercy in such a conflict is not rewarded。 The peaceful Ishvalans are slaughtered the same as their soldiers。 The Rockbells are not only casualties in a war where they offered kindness, but actively were considered liabilities for their dedication to preserving human life。It's so much easier to talk about what is right and wrong outside of war, and I have never been a solider or a murderer。 But I hope this volume does a good job of showing a glimpse of what war really looks like for those within。I think this volume also shows just how little the people in charge care about soldiers。 How easy it is to command people to die for another's political gain by selling people the fantasy of being "defenders of the people"。Truly, an exceptional volume。 。。。more

This is a flashback volume so there isn’t much as far as reveals。 We learned about how Scar became Scar and got some scenes with gone but forgotten Hughes。

August 6th, 2021 : Read in Chinese。 I was skeptical for half the volume, but Arakawa does these long flashbacks well。 It's a hard read。 But welcome after the dismal defeat that came in Vol。 14, as a reminder of why the protagonists are fighting what they are fighting, and why it matters。 August 6th, 2021 : Read in Chinese。 I was skeptical for half the volume, but Arakawa does these long flashbacks well。 It's a hard read。 But welcome after the dismal defeat that came in Vol。 14, as a reminder of why the protagonists are fighting what they are fighting, and why it matters。 。。。more

This was a great volume, we get the Ishbalan civil war story and what happened and led to it and the aftermath and from there we see how bloody it was and how it shaped characters like Roy, Hawkeye and Scar also。 Its fascinating to see the first two motives and how this war shaped them on their path to becoming who they are and also Scar's origin was sad。 Its one of the best volumes so far and just gives the much required backstory and changes thing in a big way。 And Ed listening to it all。 Also This was a great volume, we get the Ishbalan civil war story and what happened and led to it and the aftermath and from there we see how bloody it was and how it shaped characters like Roy, Hawkeye and Scar also。 Its fascinating to see the first two motives and how this war shaped them on their path to becoming who they are and also Scar's origin was sad。 Its one of the best volumes so far and just gives the much required backstory and changes thing in a big way。 And Ed listening to it all。 Also the art and face expressions are beautiful here。 。。。more
